Kidron, Beeban

   Beeban Kidron is a versatile director who has filmed both traditional and avant-garde stories. Her oeuvre includes a television adaptation of Jeannette Winterson’s lesbian coming-of-age novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1989), plus the films Antonia and Jane (1991), Used People (1992) and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995). The last named is the story (written by Douglas Carter Beane) of three drag queens en route to the Los Angeles gay pageant. They are marooned, and enliven a Mid-Western town with their ‘theatricality— gay men celebrating their feminine side’ (Kidron). Her period romance Swept From The Sea (1997) is based on Joseph Conrad’s novella Any Foster, and stars Vincent Perez, Rachel Weisz, Ian McKellen, Joss Ackland and Kathy Bates.
